Back to size guide

Float comes from surface area and shape—not length alone.

Conventional powder sizing often runs longer, while volume-shifted boards gain float from extra width and may be ridden much shorter.

Conventional powder sizing

Extra length adds surface area and can keep the nose higher in deep snow. A directional shape, setback and taper improve float without relying entirely on length.

  • Powder-focused riders may add around 2–3 cm within the valid range.
  • Trees may favour the quicker of two valid powder sizes.

Volume-shifted boards

These boards move surface area from length into width. Many are deliberately sized shorter than a conventional board, but the amount varies by model.

  • Never apply one universal “size down” number.
  • Use the exact manufacturer chart and model guidance.

Boot width still matters

A wide powder platform may create excellent float but can be unnecessarily slow edge to edge for smaller boots. Check waist width and the board’s width at the inserts.

Before you buy

Specialist powder shapes can sit well outside conventional sizing assumptions. Treat the calculator result as a reference point and follow the maker’s instructions for the exact model.
